A Few Thursday Links

by Ken Fang on October 22, 2009

In the whole Deadspin vs. ESPN and Steve Phillips affair stories that have dominated the sports blogosphere over the last 24 hours, I’m going to try to find links that don’t mention them. I’ll do my best, but I don’t think I’ll be too successful in trying to avoid the stories.

Let’s start with Neil Best of Newsday. He notes that Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen will join Fox for its pre and postgame coverage of the World Series when it begins next week.

Neil writes that Bobby Valentine is getting the work at ESPN that Steve Phillips would have had had Steve not, well, you know. There, two links in and I couldn’t avoid a Steve Phillips reference. Oh well.

Neil says New York beat Los Angeles in the ALCS Game 4 ratings for Tuesday.

And finally from Neil, we learn that next week, Newsday becomes a subscription site. It appears from now until next Wednesday are the last links we’ll have to Neil as I believe even the blogs will be subscription-based. I really buried the lead there.

Daryn Kagan has the video of a 12 year old golfer who actually outdrove Tiger Woods. It’s true!

From Darren Rovell from CNBC, he says it appears Michael Jordan’s son won’t be wearing his father’s brand shoes at Central Florida basketball games.

Darren looks at the Mets ownership which appears to have MADE money on Bernie Madoff’s Ponzi scheme.

And Darren says a sports league you may not know about gave away tickets this year and got some growth as a result.

Eric Fisher of Sports Business Journal says NBA TV has a new carriage deal that will increase its reach to 45 million homes across the country.

Richard Sandomir of the New York Times has a short story on Steve Phillips.

Richard writes that a group wanting to preserve the old Yankee Stadium has hit a couple of snags.

And Richard along with Ken Belson have a story on the Mets ownership and the Madoff money.

The New York Post is really having fun with the Steve Phillips affair story. You can read more here, here, here, here, here, here, and finally, here.

Bob Raissman of the New York Daily News weighs in the Steve Phillips affair.

Jerry Barmash from the New York Examiner says the Yankees continue to pull in the ratings in New York.

A couple of stories from Indiana University’s National Sports Journalism Center.

Dave Kindred searches to find the fun in sports writing.

Laura Nachman gives her thoughts on the ads running in TBS’ coverage of the NLCS.

John Kiesewetter of the Cincinnati Enquirer says with a rare Bengals game to air, the local Fox affiliate is going all out this Sunday.

Bob Wolfley in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel says ESPN NBA analyst Jalen Rose is focusing on Bucks rookie Brandon Jennings this season.

The great Tom Hoffarth of the Los Angeles Daily News talks with Joe Buck of Fox Sports.

Tom transcribes how Vin Scully put the postscript on the end of the Dodgers’ season.

Diane Pucin in the Los Angeles Times says TBS’ Chip Caray showed little to no imagination during last night’s NLCS Game 5.

Chris Zelkovich in the Toronto Star looks at the weekend ratings in Canada.

Rob Longley of the the Toronto Sun says CBC is considering dropping the Maple Leafs from Hockey Night in Canada if their record doesn’t improve soon. Thanks to Steve Lepore from Puck The Media for the link.

William Houston in his Truth & Rumours blog explains why Al Strachan was suddenly fired from Hockey Night in Canada.

William writes that it’s embarrassing to have 27 journalists and hosts involved in the CTV/TSN/Rogers Sportsnet Olympic broadcasting consortium to take part in the Olympic torch relay to Vancouver.

The always lovely Amanda Rykoff says there’s a rare sports harmonic convergence on November 1.

Jason Pinter of the Huffington Post talks with the insufferable Bill Simmons who’s threatening to leave ESPN again. We’ve heard this all before, Bill. Either leave or shut up. Thanks to The Arena blog for the link.

Jerod Morris from the Midwest Sports Fan blog talks with ESPN Public Enemy No. 1 AJ Daulerio of Deadspin about his scorched earth policy in a podcast.

The Bob’s Blitz blog has a totally wrong video of an idiotic Phillies fan making lewd gestures behind a reporter for the local NBC affiliate.

We have some more recaps from Blogs with Balls, Las Vegas here, here and here.

Kristine Leahy of WEEI.com has today’s version of The Five.

That’s it for now. I might do another linkfest later this evening.
