Lazy Monday Linkage

by Ken Fang on August 3, 2009

Lazy refers to me not wanting to do work after doing so all day yesterday so I’m blogging instead. By the way, expect a review of the HBO documentary, “Assault in the Ring” later today. It aired over the weekend and I wanted to get my thoughts on the doc up before it gets too late. Look for that sometime in the afternoon.

Right now, let’s do some linkage.

Over the weekend, I conducted an interview with WEEI/CSN’s Lou Merloni about his decision to remain with WEEI and his thoughts about being a broadcaster now that his baseball playing days are over.

Michael Hiestand of USA Today says we might see Brett Favre on TV as an analyst this season and I really hope we don’t.

Over to the Sports Business Journal where we link to four stories, three of which deal with the US Olympic Network.

First, Tripp Mickle and John Ourand take us down the road to where the U.S. Olympic Committee decided to launch its own channel against NBC’s and the International Olympic Committee’s wishes.

Tripp and John write that support from the National Governing Bodies is not there for the channel.

In addition, Tripp and John say Comcast won’t launch USON unless it hits the 17-20 million subscriber mark.

John has a column in this week’s SBJ regarding the low ratings and low cost for sports-themed reality TV shows.

CNBC’s Darren Rovell wonders if teams actually own the advertising rights to their practice jerseys.

Bruce Allen says the lineup for the new WBZ-FM is coming together for next week’s launch.

The latest edition of The Five with Kristine Leahy is up at WEEI.com.

Phil Mushnick of the New York Post shows the generational disconnect by spewing hate at ESPN’s X Games. If it’s up to Phil, we would all sit on the porch in rocking chairs shaking our proverbial fists at those young whippersnappers. Settle down, Phil.

Ray Frager of the Sports Media Journal remembers his days working with Buster Olney at the Baltimore Sun.

Tom Jones of the St. Petersburg Times reviews the weekend in TV sports.

Barry Horn of the Dallas Morning News has reader reaction to his Saturday column in regards to Fox Sports Southwest field and crowd interviews during Texas Rangers broadcasts.

Dusty Saunders from the Denver Post looks at the long line of Broncos announcers from their inception to the present day.

Chris Zelkovich of the Toronto Star feels Terrell Owens’ reality show is not worth watching.

Bruce Dowbiggin from the Toronto Globe and Mail says CTV/TSN’s Rod Black is a nice guy who gets criticized quite often.

Sky News in the UK looks at today’s launch of ESPN ahead of its scheduled run of English Premier League games later this month.

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk says the Arena Football League is officially kaput.

An interesting story from Gail Sideman in the Sports Networker website about the changes for women in the sports public relations field over the last 30 years.

Brian Steinberg of Advertising Age writes that CBS is allowing advertisers to name their own price and package for Super Bowl XLIV.

I owe my good friend Steve Lepore of Puck The Media a link. Last week, I linked to part one of his interview with Pittsburgh Penguins voice Mike Lange. Then I got busy and I forgot to link to part two. Well, it’s only fair to link to the second part so here it is.

That’s going to do it for now.
