In a story that broke Monday evening, Yahoo! Sports which has been hiring writers left and right raided the Boston Globe and hired Celtics beat writer Marc Spears. The move comes as the Globe has been in flux as the New York Times Company has been battling the Boston Newspaper Guild over financial concessions.
Spears has been in talks with Yahoo! to join its staff for almost a year. The move comes at a time when Globe staffers wonder when, not if the death knell for the paper will be rung. So Spears took the opportunity to leave and one certainly could not blame him for doing so.
Marc tells The Big Lead that he’s looking forward to joining Yahoo. He helped to break the Rasheed Wallace to the Celtics story on Sunday.
So where does this leave the Globe? Frank Dell’Apa is the only one left to cover the Celtics beat. Could the paper bring Shira Springer back? Hiring from outside the company may not be in the cards considering the financial condition of the Globe.
It leaves the Herald with strength in numbers with Mark Murphy and Steve Bulpett. WEEI.com’s Jessica Camerato and contributor Jeff Goodman are teaming up to provide solid coverage of the Celtics and the NBA for Entercom’s website.
In addition, there’s Comcast SportsNet’s Gary Tanguay who’s been developing solid contacts as part of the C’s cable home.
It will be interesting to see what direction the Globe takes for the Celtics beat.
